My PhD research:
Exploring the commodification of care and its impact on carers' rights.

At Goldsmiths University, I'm conducting an ethnography that explores care workers' working conditions in conjunction with the commodification of care. To do so, I will conduct interviews with NHS workers to compare their conditions with carers working in for-profit care corporations. The research is novel because rights and carers' working conditions rarely correspond.

During the ethnography, I will follow carers as they train at a training company that specialises in restraint techniques for NHS workers and social care workers. I aim to establish a rapport with the participants and undertake ad-hoc interviews and participant observations.

The research will include interviews with lead care experts in the GMB trade union to understand the sector's landscape from their perspective. I also aim to bring in other professionals and stakeholders.

I aim to collaborate with private care corporations following the research to see how my insights play out in private companies to help them fully support their care workforce. Fundamentally, I want the research to impact policy.
